The Infiltrator: a new Light Playstyle
The Light gets its fourth Playstyle, which brings it level with the Medium and Heavy, Design Director Matt Lowe said.
True Sight (Specialization): a rework of Thermal Vision, which has been out of rotation since Season 8. It highlights enemy players and deployables and reveals cloaked players, even when they are disguised.
True Sight drains an energy meter while active. It sees through environmental smoke and smoke grenades and shows the team colors of highlighted enemies and items.
Mimic Device (Gadget): scan any prop and temporarily disguise yourself as it. Some disguises copy the prop's function too, like a gas canister teammates can launch or a healing barrel, and taking damage can trigger that effect.
Translocator (Gadget): mark an object such as a prop, then swap places with it while it stays in range. Lowe's examples include pulling an enemy turret out of a room and swapping into a thrown gas canister.
Reworked Arenas
World Director Joakim Stigsson said Season 12 starts with some of the first Arenas, and other maps will get changes in later seasons.
This season: Monaco, Seoul and Skyway Stadium.
Changes include new spaces and landmarks, reworked areas, better sightlines and new traversal options, focused on key locations.
Each map now has its own sponsor, with its own colors and visual identity.
Lighting, tone mapping and color grading were revisited across the maps, along with new and updated props, materials and set dressing.
Embark calls this the biggest update to the destruction system since launch.
The server-side system had two layers: Strain, which handles building integrity, and physics for falling chunks. A new gradual destruction layer now sits between them.
Broken pieces stay loosely attached and can hinge, swing, twist and bend. Expect ramped floors, twisted corridors and sagging sections, and suspended structures that swing before they fall.
Explosions from player weapons now send out blast waves that push walls, bend ceilings and can launch pieces of roof.
Collapsed buildings get crumbling dust, creaking audio and debris that forms new piles.
Smoke and poison gas clouds now follow the changing environment, no longer affect you through walls, and can be partly cleared with explosions.
Sponsor Journey
Each Sponsor now has its own story, Challenges and a Handler who guides you, according to Game Designer Raunaq and Narrative Writer Inés.
Three Sponsors at launch, with more planned later:
OSPUZE, for adrenaline seekers. Handler: Rico Rampage, King of the Fizzheads.
ALFA ACTA, for protectors who set traps and plan ahead. Handler: Grandma McJohnson.
ISEUL-T, for show-stoppers. Handler: Ramona, a fashion influencer in ISEUL-T's inner circle.
Challenges and Contracts for your Sponsor unlock dozens of free rewards, including expressions, weapon skins and outfits.
Fans now progress your World Tour rank, and your Sponsor gives you new ways to earn them.
The story comes through intercepted voicemails, secret correspondence and in-world podcasts.
HUD and menus
UX Director Linda Hovde said the rebuild is about showing what you need, when you need it.
HUD text was reworked for legibility, and you can scale the HUD. Hovde said the team also considered players on ultrawide monitors.
A new side panel gives key information and actions while the match stays visible.
A new Quick Settings tab holds volume, quality and sensitivity. You choose what appears there from the settings screen.
The main menu is cleaner, with new navigation on both PC and console.
Respec Order changes become permanent
In his October 13 blog, Matt Lowe confirmed that Season 12 makes the Respec Order movement speed and health changes for Light and Heavy permanent.
The health gap between Light and Heavy drops from 200 HP to 150 HP.
In the Respec Order 3.0 test, Light health went from 150 to 175 and Heavy health from 350 to 325.
The same test cut Light forward sprint speed from 7 m/s to 6.6 m/s and raised Heavy forward sprint speed from 5.8 m/s to 6 m/s.
52.6% of surveyed players wanted the changes made permanent. Embark's data showed slightly more cohesive teams and outlier team composition win rates moving closer to 50%.
